Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics
Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, as one of the five departments in School of Public Health, Nanjing Medical University, was united in 1999 by the original teaching sections of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. It undertakes the curriculum of epidemiology, biostatistics, medical sterilization and sanitary microbiology for undergraduate and graduate students, along with projects of science research and technology development.
Faculty and Staff
The department currently has 20 faculty members and staffs, including 5 professors (3 advisor for Ph.D program), 4 associate professors, 8 lecturers, 2 teaching assistants and 1 experiment engineer. Twelve faculty members have had Ph.D. degree and one is 2009 Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor. Of the 14 young faculty members, 8 have got their Ph.D degree. To qualify young faculty members, punctual attendance is required, prep-lectures are audited and teaching practices and academic intercommunion are encouraged. Meanwhile, lead researchers hold academic lecture periodically, to adapt the young to the teaching and research work and enable them to fulfill the teaching task according to the characteristic curriculum plans.
The department has two teaching units and one medical data processing center. It offers diverse courses including epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, medical sterilization, sanitary microbiology and medical biostatistics for five-year undergraduate of preventive medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology, pharmacy, nursing and seven-year undergraduate of stomatology. It also offers courses of epidemiology, medical biostatistics and multivariate statistical analysis for graduates, as well as data management and analysis in medical research for clinical medicine, seven-year undergraduate of stomatology and graduates. The course of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in our department are key courses of provincial second level course, respectively.
Programs of PH.D and Master’s Degree
The department started its master degree program in Epidemiology in 1990, Ph.D and postdoctoral program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Sept. 2003. Epidemiology and Biostatistics was established as the key discipline of the Jiangsu Province Eleventh Five-year Program.
Within several years’ construction and development, the department has formed several stable and definite research branches, such as epidemiology of non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases epidemiology, statistic methods and theory study in medical field study. With the gradual development of molecular epidemiology labs, this department has possessed fundamental technique conditions including traditional epidemiology and modern molecular epidemiology providing the technique support for scientific research and technical service. Since 2001, our department has undertaken more than 50 research grants, including 1 National 863 Program project, 1 sub-grant from the National Tenth Five-year Research Program, 1 sub-grant from the National 973 Project, 1 sub-grant from National Ministry of Technology and 14 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 1 subject of Outstanding Youth Foundation, 1 Key project, 6 Youth Foundation, and 6 from other resources in National Nature Science Foundation. In the past five years, We have published 6 books and over 300 research papers in various national or international journals, including over 100 articles taken by Science Citation Index (SCI) and won 8 awards of advances in science and technology above the provincial or ministerial level.
